The Ulster Aviation Society (UAS) is a remarkable volunteer-run charitable organisation dedicated to preserving and celebrating Northern Ireland’s rich aviation legacy. Established in 1968, the UAS houses a Heritage Collection in two historic Second World War hangars at Maze Long Kesh, just outside Lisburn, County Antrim. Home to over 54 aircraft, rotorcraft, vehicles, flight simulators, VR suites, and themed display rooms, it offers visitors a hands-on immersion into aviation history.
Operating completely through the passion and dedication of volunteers, visitors experience personal guided tours where they can sit in cockpits, interact with exhibits, and learn about restoration projects firsthand. Its collection spans from vintage Second World War fighters to Cold War jets, civilian and home-built aircraft, along with military helicopters and innovative Shorts-built prototypes that highlight Northern Ireland’s historical aircraft production heritage.
Significant acquisitions include iconic aircraft gifted by the RAF—such as the Phantom FG.1, Tornado GR.4, Jaguar GR.1, and Red Arrows Hawk—as well as rare rotorcraft like the Westland Lynx, Gazelle, Puma, Wessex, Sycamore, and Alouette III. Special experimental types on display include the unique Short SB.4 Sherpa and Short Tucano prototypes, illustrating cutting-edge development from Belfast’s Shorts factory. The Society also displays cockpit sections, artefacts, engines, and a library of rare aviation reference materials, with simulators offering visitors the chance to pilot fast jets or helicopters virtually.
UAS has earned widespread recognition for its work, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2018, and is led by volunteers and enthusiasts dedicated to education and heritage. Their efforts not only preserve historic aircraft but also inspire future generations and foster community engagement through interactive restoration and outreach programmes.
